The word

What ‘khalasi’ means

A khalasi is a sailor or dockhand — the word came into Gujarati and Hindi through Persian. The song’s khalasi is not bound to any port: he is a limitless wanderer following the shores of Gujarat wherever they lead.

Coke Studio released it as a story of wanderlust. The words are Saumya Joshi’s, and the sound leans on body percussion and Dhruv Visvanath’s percussive guitar, so the voyage feels rhythmic and physical rather than orchestral.

The making

A call from Coke Studio

For Aditya, the invitation came as an unexpected call from Coke Studio — something he has described as a dream come true. He has said the sailor’s story resonated with him, and that the song let him explore new sides of his voice.

The launch was as unusual as the song. A teaser on 28 June 2023 announced the date, and fans who scanned a QR code on Coke cans could hear Khalasi five days before it reached YouTube on 5 July.

After Khalasi

The song kept going

A remix pack followed in October 2024, and the song’s composer Achint and lyricist Saumya Joshi reunited with Aditya and Falguni Pathak for ‘Rangaara’ that July.

In 2025 he returned to the platform for Season 3 with ‘Meetha Khaara’, a song for the salt farmers of Kutch, and performed both songs at the ICC Women’s World Cup semi-final.
